Linkin Park: 'Our last album was bonkers'

Linkin Park have admitted that they went overboard with the experimentation on their last album 'A Thousand Suns', a record which frontman Chester Bennington has described as "bonkers".

The band are currently working on their fifth album in their Los Angeles studio and are set to release it in the summer, with Bennington promising that they will return to more familiar territory on the new album.

Speaking to Kerrang! about the band's plans for the new album and how it compared to 'A Thousand Suns', the singer said: "With this album, we've incorporated a lot of guitar work with big choruses and the heavier electronic stuff to give it that really big wall of sound feeling without getting too metal. This will be more familiar to people than 'A Thousand Suns' was, where we were like 'Fuck it, we're just going to go bonkers."

Bennington also admitted that the band had very consciously tried to "break out of the nu-metal box" on their previous two studio albums and they were feeling a lot more comfortable this time round.

He added: "Over the previous two records, we were trying hard to break out of the nu-metal box that we'd found ourselves in. It's very easy to characterise us as that based on 'Hybrid Theory' and 'Meteora', but we knew there was more to us than that. With the exception of the metal guitar tone we had on the first two records – which, I think is the reason that a lot of people really like the band – I feel like we've found a place where we've become in our skin."

The singer also said that the new album's lyrics would be personal and avoid being political, adding: "We've been writing a lot about relationships. We're not a political band, we're a socially minded band. We try to look at things that we find in the world that we'd like to see more of, or that we'd like to see less of."

well now we know for sure that the 5th album will be nothing like ATS or MTM.thats really great news linkin park thats the right thing you must do to go back to your roots.You are the best in nu metal f*ck the pop and ATS. nu metal is the greatest thig in the world.i really really hope that someone from LP will read this.your real fans are those who scream in faint with you.noone like ATS just 10 or 20 people the rest of your 70 mil fans like meteora and hybrid theory.os thats really good news for me that LP will make the 5th album like their old songs.GO GO GO NU METAL GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I for one Hope its nothing like nu-metal. I would be okay with it, if it was nu-metal and maybe even like it. But i like their recent ones more.

The true fans are with LP at least 10 years and also could have gotten over MTM and ATS even though they knew it`s a bullshit. Not like the "new fans" who listen to it just because it`s trendy and soon will fall off like the leaves off of a tree. Think about it! Loyalty vs. trend.

"True Fans" don't consider Minutes to Midnight or A Thousand Suns as bullshit.

Ah, what an insightful post. Clearly liking HT and Meteora makes you a real fan. Let's just ignore the fact that they sold way more than MTM and ATS, had extremely predictable pop song structures, and watered down lyrics. The trendy thing to do would obviously be to start listening to a band that sells nowhere near the amount of albums they used to.

Damn, man, don`t get me started again. Did i type somewhere that liking HT and Meteora makes me a real fan? You can`t be serious. Read carefully or don`t response. And if you think "The trendy thing to do would obviously be to start listening to a band that sells nowhere near the amount of albums they used to." it`s just your opinion and i respect it. But in my opinion the trendy fan is the person who "listens to mainstream music, having no music genre in particular they follow. Who listens what is in style for the moment and then throw it away like a trash."
