Each episode of the reality show follows owner Don Short and his crew renovating a room for central Iowa homeowners, using architectural and vintage finds. But it will also show the inner workings of the store, from carpenters creating custom goods in the basement to the pickers who deliver salvaged treasures to the store’s doorstep.

The idea for West End, the store, spawned from a tag sale that was so successful, Short never ended it. That idea turned into West End Architectural Salvage, which moved into its 50,000-square-foot warehouse on the edge of downtown Des Moines in 2006.

“Our inventory comes from everywhere,” Short said. “We work with companies out of larger cities and we buy from normal, everyday people. We also get calls when buildings are coming down. There are still buildings coming down, but a lot of big beautiful homes are not coming down because people are more aware of not throwing things away.”

The store quickly became a go-to spot for homeowners wanting to cash in on the style trend of turning back the clock on decor and design. Several Hollywood production companies used West End to help create sets for films in the late 2000s.
