Hamburg, known as "the music city", October 29th - I'm heading to the arena to see LP for the fourth time in my life.
First things first: it seemed like less people were going as early as possible. I was expecting more people already waiting at the entrance when I arrived around 2 hours before the set time. Also, I noticed there were more grown-ups around the age of LP's members. I guess those fans have sticked around for the last 10 years. I liked the fact that there were less screaming girls and teenies (okay, I would have been one of them as well if I had the chance to see LP live like 5-9 years ago ..).
Since I always buy tour shirts of concerts I was glad there was a nice range of different ones so everybody probably got what they like.
First positive point was the fact that there was only one support act. I thought there would be at least two because I am used to it, so I was pretty amazed I didn't have to wait too long (my knees are broken so I can't stand around for that long).
The Show itself was great and I liked the ideas a lot. It was well set up and the stage was perfectly built for the songs and atmosphere. Intros are always something cool and special at LP's concerts and this one didn't fell short.
Mike was a little quiet this time. Usually he talks and interacts more with the crowd. I'm not sure if this was due to the new songs - there are not too many that would work with crowd interaction - or if he was too busy with all the stuff he does - it has become a lot, wow - or just a little tired from the previous shows.
The only bad thing (for me) was the sound sometimes. It was a little hard to hear the mics from time to time and the guitars seemed a little low, like they were going for a bass orientated sound (to fit the overall ATS style). That doesn't really work well with, say, One Step Closer for example. Or maybe I am just too used to the actual sound of the songs that it didn't work for me :)
The concert had a well-thought-out tracklist (see below). Most of the songs Linkin Park played matched the atmosphere and ATS style of the tour. I personally liked that Joe was included a lot :)
The new songs were well done, I didn't think they could play them live that well. Especially When They Come For Me was absolutely great. It wasn't perfect (tone-wise, which is hard for hours onstage anyways) but playing that song live with all the drums and backgrounds was simply stunning.
Starting A Place For My Head right in the middle of Bleed It Out was brilliant!
Sadly, it was over too fast. I know, everybody thinks that way after a concert but this time it didn't really feel like it was finished although it was more songs than the concerts I have been to before. I thought there would be a little more.
I was missing a few songs like Papercut, Don't Stay and Points of Authority. They probably played those all the years so it's alright they change it but my girlfriend was with me for the first time and she would have loved to "see" those songs as well. Maybe next time ;)
I was close to catching a drum stick, a bottle of water and a plectrum .. why always close? Whenever I'm at an LP concert I am CLOSE to catching anything and this time everything was really close to me. The drum stick was a little in front of me in the air. I am tall and good at jumping high but it was like three rows in front of me so I only touched it. A plectrum laid around on the ground near us but nobody noticed until the end. And the guy next to me got the bottle of water. He actually got hit by it, it flew right into him.
Next time, please, make me catch something ;)
Thoughts about future shows
I know it is a really hard job to come up with a show and I love LP for always coming up with a different thing (even during one tour). Creating intros and outros for different songs is great and I hope they keep doing that.
Personally, I hope LP might have some sort of retro tour someday, playing Hybrid Theory songs (and the older ones) + some Meteora songs that work with those. It just needs the aggressive sound of the concerts in small clubs in the past ;)
I hope LP comes back to Europe/Germany soon. I will definitely be around again and I'm looking forward to their next ideas!
