Ok, it was an uneventful drive up on Tuesday from KC. Had Portillo's hot dogs for dinner (suggested by a friend). Probably the best hot dog EVER! Wife and I got up and grabbed some Starbucks on the way to the United Center for the Summit, which was one of the most fun events I have been to.
It was amazing to see the staff and how well everyone came together to make everything click and keep the guys doing what they do best. We signed up for the stage tour and got some great shots of the LP weapons of choice. Wife and I have a great shot of us both holding Brad's guitars. They were beautiful to say the least...told the wife I want one or twelve. Rob's kit is busy but it has to be.
The sound check was cool and very entertaining. It let us see how the guys work through issues they come across and it was nice to see how that aspect of their working relationship was present with everyone we came in contact with throughout the day.
Meet and Greet time was funny to say the least. My wife was so nervous. The guys were great! Down to earth and engaging everyone like we had all known each other for years. It just goes to show how the guys really do see all the fans as part of the family. Shaking hands and asking questions to the fans and really listening....what a great time!
Q and A was pretty cool as well. One thing for sure is the guys all have a great sense of humor! Brad, Chester and Mike were available for questions while Joe and Rob gave tours and Phoenix played FIFA 2011 with one lucky silent auction bidder. The question was asked of the guys what they would be doing if they were not making music....Brad "working at QVC" -hillarious! Chester...A real estate agent.. followed by a here is your fucking house...wanna buy it? I was laughing so hard I almost missed Mike say....I would be working for Brad. At QVC, Brad replied. Getting him coffee or something... said Mike. I was almost in tears at this point. There was also a question about where the inspiration came from for A Thousand Suns...Mike handled this one flawlessly. Without missing a beat said We all looked at Chester and thought...Chester is a weird dude, so we should make a weird album. Laughs all around.
At the end of the day it was almost 5:30 and the guys had to get going and prepare for what was sure to be one hell of a show. Sadly we have to wait till Sat to see it, but WE WILL SEE IT! We headed back to our hotel elated and a little tired, grabbed some Gino's East and chilled before the drive back to KC this morning.
Our drive back was a mess all the way across Illinois. Snow everywhere. We took our time and reflected on a great trip to the Windy City to see our favorite band in what is sure to be one of the memories we will cherish forever.
