Being a refugee from flood situation in central Bangkok, I went back to stay in my hometown, Sukhothai, until the big festival came. Loy Kratong Festival was originated in Sukhothai in Sukhothai period which was, literally, Thai's first capital city.
Loi literally means 'to float,' while kratong refers to the lotus-shaped receptacle which can float on the water. Originally, the kratong was made of banana leaves or the layers of the trunk of a banana tree or a spider lily plant. A kratong contains food, betel nuts, flowers, joss sticks, candle and coins. Modern kratongs are more often made of bread or styrofoam.
What I recorded in this vdo is Yi-Peng as Loi Kratong coincides with the Lanna (northern Thai) festival known as "Yi Peng" (Thai: ยี่เป็ง). Due to a difference between the old Lanna calendar and the Thai calendar, Yi Peng is held on a full moon of the 2nd month of the Lanna calendar ("Yi" meaning "2nd" and "Peng" meaning "month" in the Lanna language). A multitude of Lanna-style sky lanterns (khom loi (Thai: โคมลอย), literally: "floating lanterns") are launched into the air where they resemble large flocks of giant fluorescent jellyfish gracefully floating by through the sky.
My hometown, Sukhothai, is known as the origin of Loi Kratong festival but I didn't record when I floated the vessel because I prefer the light and movement of the lamps. Sorry for not having the Sukhothai traditional stuff in here. However, you can find out about vessel floating in Toursim Authority of Thailand. I believe that you can find out about it with same kind of tags in this vdo as well.
I also have some pic I took to share with you here.
Various shapes of modern krathong (vessel)
(The kid is the seller's daughter. Sometimes kid is allowed to stay up late for watching the fireworks
or join some fun activities during this kind of festival)
Fireworks captured by me, without tripods. Sorry it didn't appear to be so beautiful.
The first 2 pix are the lamp and candles in Loi Kratong Festival held in Sukhothai Historical Park, Sukhothai province, Thailand. The printed fish on the lamp is a symbol of fertility as the name ‘Sukhothai’ means ‘The dawn of happiness.’ We also have a well-known quote that ‘(Always) fish in the water, (Always) rice in the field’
I wish there’s miracle taking me back to the old time.
And I hope you guys have a chance to come here :)
