The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, also known as the Orange Africa Cup of Nations for sponsorship reasons, to be held from 19 January to 10 February 2013, will be the 29th Africa Cup of Nations, the football championship of Africa organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations is shaping up to be a great month of football. It's an opportunity to see some of the best African countries showcased in a way that isn't available at the World Cup. Group A action kicks off on January 19 with South Africa facing off with Cape Verde Islands. For those interested, ESPN will be airing the 16-team tournament, though most matches will be online (h/t the Washington Post).

Teams such as Nigeria, Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire start the tournament as favourites, but Zambia showed last year that anything is possible at the Afcon as they won their first ever title after by beating Didier Drogba & Co. in the final. The Zambians will have to deal with the Super Eagles, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia in Group C if they are to repeat last year's success. Drogba's Cote d'Ivoire are paired with Tunisia, Algeria and Togo in Group D, while Ghana meet Mali, Niger and DR Congo in Group B.

Meanwhile, record-winners Egypt, who have claimed the title seven times, failed to qualify for the finals this time around. The top two teams of each group qualify for the quarter-finals, which will be held on February 2 and February 3. The semi-finals will then be held on February 6, with the showpiece taking place four days later in Johannesburg.
