Call The Midwife is a drama series adapted for television by Heidi Thomas from Jennifer Worth's best selling memoir, book of the same name. The series is a colourful look at the world of midwifery and family life in 1950's East End London. Jenny joins an eccentric community of nursing nuns having just qualified.

Last series it was a sure fire hit, even beating Downton Abbey in the ratings war during its season one finale. And now anticipation is mounting as the stars of Call The Midwife were spotted started to film the second series this week. Lead stars Jessica Raine and Pam Ferris have thrown themselves back into work in their 1950s-based characters

Call the Midwife has had a huge impact with audiences. It's a very high-quality drama series from a brilliant team. It manages to be both hard-hitting and emotional, gritty and warm. In the holiday special, Christmas is coming and the nuns and midwives are busier than ever. An abandoned baby is discovered on the steps of convent, leaving the whole community to rally to find the mother.

The series is heart warming, feel good stuff, perfect for a BBC1 audience on a Sunday evening. In the UK there was also a Christmas Special at the end of 2012. However, some critics have accused the show of being too cosy and nice and that it fails to capture the gritty reality of life in London's East End in the 1950s.

The BBC are therefore promising a darker, more gritty midwife drama in season 2. Along with home baking on the menu, they also promise a diet of prostitution, domestic violence and child neglect.
